THE FUTURE AND PAST COLLIDE IN FINAL 2023 PERFORMANCES FOR RENOWNED NZTRIO
NZTrio presents
Homeland 3: Dumky
The award-winning NZTrio present the final performances in their dynamic 2023 programme with Homeland 3: Dumky, heading to seven venues across Nelson, Auckland, Gisborne, Wellington and Whangārei this November.
The final concert for the year from the indisputably talented combo of Amalia Hall (Violin), Ashley Brown (Cello) and Somi Kim (Piano) sees melodies of the past shape the music of the 20th century, and a look to the future with a newly commissioned work by arts laureate and one of New Zealand’s leading composers, Ross Harris. Harris has written more than 200 compositions during his illustrious career, and this latest piece will add to NZTrio’s extensive repertoire of commissions by NZ based composers.
In Homeland 3: Dumky audiences can prepare to be swept away by Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch’s evocative Three Nocturnes which showcase his Jewish heritage with staggering impressionistic beauty, before the heartfelt melodies of Vitezslav Novák's dramatic one-movement ballade, written when he was simultaneously gazing back in time to traditional Czech folk melodies, yet also looking ahead to tonal modernism. Then, Frank Martin takes listeners on a rambunctious journey through popular Irish melodies that will be sure to awaken your inner dancer. NZTrio returns to the sounds of Aotearoa with an exciting new work by celebrated NZ composer Ross Harris, before embarking upon the joy and nostalgia of Antonín Dvořák's famous Dumky trio, overflowing with a wealth of village songs and Czech country dances.
This closes out a packed year of performances for NZTrio which has explored home and the powerful nature of human expression.
"It has been a heart-warming experience seeing how our audiences have embraced the ideas of home and belonging that is at the centre of the Homeland series. It’s a total privilege for us to make our way through Dvořák’s masterpieces this year - they’re such sincere homages to the folk music of his homeland. We’ve paired them alongside some really fascinating pieces that aren’t heard very often and we’re loving sharing this music with our audiences all over Aotearoa. We can’t wait to reveal what we have in store for 2024 - stay tuned!” says NZTrio.
