World Press Photo Exhibition
Saturday 22nd July - Sunday 20th August, Auckland
The prestigious World Press Photo Exhibition, a showcase of the most powerful images across the globe from the past year, returns to Auckland this month for the first time since 2019. The collection of award winning photographs from the world’s best photojournalists and documentary photographers will be on display at Smith and Caughey’s Level 5 Gallery Space from Saturday 22 July – Sunday 20 August.
World Press Curator Marika Cukrowski will be on the ground and available for interview on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 July to speak on the exhibition and the diverse portfolio of stories behind the award winning photographs.
Representing major news events and important moments across the world, subjects range from war, environmental and climate change, culture and more. The World Press Photo Exhibition features a selection of images from global and regional winners taken by international photographers. One featured collection, The Voice of New York Is Drill, by Ashley Peña, was originally photographed for New York Magazine. The Voice of New York is Drill offers an intimate look at several members of the new generation of young drill music artists striving to realise their dreams.
Included in the exhibition is Australian Floods in Infrared by Australian geographic information scientist, photographer, and researcher, specialising in natural perils and infrared photography by Chad Ajamian. This series offers a unique perspective on the floods that have devastated areas in New South Wales, Australia. Aerial infrared imaging renders vegetation in pinks and reds, contrasting sharply against blues and cyans, which represent water. Also in the exhibition is Maya Levin’s photograph Shireen Abu Akleh’s Funeral (photographed for Associated Press), which shows Israeli police beating mourners accompanying the coffin of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh to her funeral in East Jerusalem.
These stories and more will be portrayed through breathtaking photographs at this year’s World Press Photo Exhibition.
Rotary Club of Auckland are proud to bring the World Press Photo Exhibition to Auckland, with all proceeds going towards Rotary Foundation Projects and the TYLA (Turn Your Life Around) Youth Development Trust.
