WELLINGTON RAW COMEDY QUEST SEMIFINALS AND FINALS
July 27 - August 18, 2022

With the heats rolling out weekly, The 2022 Wellington Raw Comedy Quest is well underway to reveal the new talent of the Wellington comedy scene. These are the comics that will go on to become the next big things. The top 24 rookie comics from the heats go through to the semi-finals for a night of kick-ass comedy at San Fran on 27 July and 4 August, with the grand Wellington final hosted by Justine Smith on Thursday 18 August.

The legacy of Wellington comics cutting their teeth in raw is massive. Locals James Malcolm, Savanna Calton, Lucy Roche, and Gabby Anderson won the 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018 National Raw Comedy Quests - can the capital do it again?

Not only can audiences get a taste of those that will be regular features on our comedy stages but also those that chose to work full time in comedy as writers, directors and performers. One such talent is the incredible Sam Smith who was one of the first Wellington Raw Comedy Quest finalists and is now writing for Taskmaster. Wellington Raw opens doors and develops comedians to make a sustainable career in this rich industry which has produced Wellington greats: Ben Hurley, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer and Flight of the Conchords.

Event producer Jerome Chandrahasen is happy that the creative capital is back after Covid cancelled live laughs:

“We’ve had such great support from the City Council, this is one way the capital city is rebuilding after COVID. We're back at the final with the original home of Wellington Comedy, San Fran, and it’s going to be awesome.

“Comedy is an art-form for everyone,” says Chandrahasen. “We have entrants that are ordinary folk from a lot of different backgrounds, which is what we’re all about.”

We will continue to announce finalists as they are confirmed over the coming weeks. Media will have the opportunity to interview all semi-finalists and the Wellington Raw Comedy Quest winner, ahead of them competing for the national title in October. (The national final in October will take place in Auckland with the date still to be confirmed.)
