SHORT DOCUMENTARY RELEASES SEPT 4

RELEASE DATE

After a survey exposes the extent of sexual harm at her former high school, a filmmaker returns to amplify the student's call for change and ask a pivotal question:  Why is consent education still not compulsory in Aotearoa?

In 2022, a group of Avonside Girls’ High Students demanded that their school run a survey to prove the extent of the sexual harassment they were facing. To put it plainly, the results were awful.

The survey was completed by 72% of Avonside students, with 68% having experienced sexual harassment.
379 students reported 2650 incidents of harassment.

On average, participants had been harassed 10 times in their short lives.

Twenty-one students said they’d been raped or nearly raped.

Liv McClymont is a Director, and advocate for comprehensive consent and sexual violence prevention education. She also happens to be a proud old girl of Avonside Girls’ High who commissioned this important survey.

Produced by Cable Maiden Productions, I Stand For Consent sheds a light on the need for compulsory consent education in Aotearoa - in which Liv returns to her old high school, Avonside, which recently surveyed their students of experiences of sexual harm.

Fed up with sharing stories of harassment & desperate for it to stop – the Avonside students wanted to prove the issue to their community and provoke them to create meaningful change… and not just at their school.

When Liv asked Aurora, an Avonside student who led the survey, how the New Zealand Government could help, she immediately answered – “make consent education comprehensive, and compulsory for all schools in Aotearoa.”

I Stand For Consent was selected and commissioned through Someday Stories, an annual collection of six social and sustainability-focused short films made by Aotearoa’s emerging filmmakers.

Someday Stories is produced by Connected Media with support from NZ On Air, Te Māngai Pāho, and the New Zealand Film Commission in association with their Screen Partners, Stuff, Māori Television and RNZ.
