SILO THEATRE RISES FROM THE DEAD!
Silo Theatre presents
The Milford Asset Management Season of
LIVE LIVE CINEMA: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
Created and Composed by Leon Radojkovic
Film by George Romero
Co-Directed by Sam Snedden and Sophie Roberts
Silo Theatre returns to the stage with a frightful and hilarious reimagining of cult classic zombie film Night of the Living Dead. Performed by two fearless actors set against the screening of the original 1968 film, the production runs at the iconic Hollywood Avondale for a limited Halloween season from 2 – 12 November.
Set to be The Last of Us meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show, this will be an unparalleled night of camp cinema, theatre and music that will have audiences screaming in delight and terror. After planned seasons in 2021 and 2022 were disrupted, and following the theatre company’s strategic retreat into the shadows this year, Live Live Cinema: Night of the Living Dead is the perfect opportunity to celebrate Silo’s resurrection.
George Romero’s iconic film aside, the thrill of this must-see show comes from experiencing the perilous plight of actors Jack Buchanan (The Trojan War, Homos, or Everyone in America) and Isla Mayo (Nora: A Doll’s House, Not Woman Enough) as they take on the monumental challenge of performing all but one of the characters in the film while also playing the musical score and creating sound effects to match the suspense and gory action as it happens on screen behind them. This is one acting gig not for the faint hearted.
Night of the Living Dead is widely recognised as the first zombie movie, spawning an entire genre and went on to become one of the most influential films for cinema-making in the USA. Lead actor Duane Jones made history as the first black lead in a horror film as he held a mirror up to the social and political concerns of America in the 1960s. His character’s voice is the only one that will not be performed by the cast.
The film itself has stark parallels with present day even decades after its release, presenting a version of reality devouring itself from within, which is sure to leave audiences dwelling on the spine-tingling relevance.
“At one point we clutched each other and screamed like teenagers… The enveloping result - in our case at least - was embarrassingly effective. Exhilarating.”
– NZ Herald on Carnival of Souls
At the helm of this wickedly immersive production are directors Sam Snedden (The Wasp, Burn Her) and Sophie Roberts (The Writer, The Wolves), leading Buchanan and Mayo as they perform at breakneck speed to bring this film to life. As the muted action of Night of the Living Dead unfolds on the cinema screen, an original score, composed by Leon Radojkovic (Peter and the Wolf, My Heart Goes Thadak Thadak), creates a unique atmospheric soundscape.
“This production and the events that surround it are a total no brainer for theatre, film and audio buffs alike”, laughs director, Sam Snedden.
Following on from Little Shop of Horrors, Carnivals of Souls and Dementia 13, Live Live Cinema has been captivating audiences in Australia, Ireland, UK, Europe, and across Aotearoa with their feverishly sophisticated productions. Night of the Living Dead is set to be the ultimate live live experience that must be seen to be believed.
